If you go to Trento the closest airport should be Verona.

There are a number of discount flights at competitive prices for car hire have made this a much more attractive option in recent years. Check out prices and availability NOW!!.
I really recommend driving around the Alps. Alpine roads include some of the most beautiful scenery you are likely to see while driving and the advantages of having your own car in resort are considerable.

Positive points:

- Drive on beautiful mountain roads
- Follow the snow and tour from one resort to another
- Get off the beaten track
- More flexibility over flight times/dates than charter-based packages
- A better way to travel for long weekends
- Car rentals companies often upgrade you

Negative points:

- Your luggage is still limited to your flight allowance
- Hire of chains are usually at extra cost
- You need to know how to put chains on!
- Automatics are no use for Alpine roads
- Don't forget to factor in accommodation when you cost it out

Who to Hire From?

we recommend First Car Hire for car hire. We used them five times last winter and were upgraded on four occasions. Their website is fast and easy to use and their prices are very good, plus they will refund your excess if you have an accident. Excellent service.

Safe Driving:

Even if there's no snow on the road, you should always be aware of possible black ice or the next unmarked hairpin bend. And if there is snow, don't take too long before putting on your chains.

In many cases they're not necessary, particularly if you have snow tires, but depending on the temperature, wind and depth of snow, in most cases chains (or a 4x4) are the only safe option.

If you've never used chains before, you should definitely practice first. When it's dark, snowing heavily and -10C outside, you'll want to get it done as quickly as possible.

It's when you're going downhill that you'll need to be particularly cautious. Stay in a low gear, keep your speed down and brake where possible by using the engine. Avoid using the brake on bends in particular. Easier said than done of course, but if you do feel the wheels lock and start to slide then steer into the slide.

Important

Your Driving licence - without this you are truly up a creek without a paddle!

Airport Transfers:

A viable alternative to hiring a car if there are several of you is to book a transfer from the aiport. The advantages are that you can be met at the airport by an English speaker who knows the resort inside out plus how to get there!

All of which means you don't need to worry about mucking round with snow chains or finding your way to and around resort.

Last Summer I landed on Malaga Airport with an idea of what Spain was about. What I found was Mediterranean beaches, sangria in the sun and paella by the plateful. Southern Spain has long been a popular place, but tourists are increasingly turning to the fascinations of another Spain, far removed from the high-rise developments lining the Costa del Sol. Spain is a treasure chest of unforgettable scenery. Separating Spain from France, the snow-capped Pyrenees, as well as breathtaking views, offer resorts like La Molina and Panticosa with plenty of opportunities for skiing. In the north, the winding rivers and lush, green forests of Galicia present a picture not usually associated with Spain, and in complete contrast to the Moorish influenced south, Galician culture traces its routes to a Celtic origin. Everywhere are reminders of Spain’s rich and varied past, from the Alhambra in Granada to Don Quixote’s windmills in La Mancha.

Old mixes with new in cities such as Toledo, Barcelona, Salamanca, and the capital Madrid, as celebrated museums, galleries and Baroque churches rub shoulders with blaring bars and thumping discos.

What will never change is the Spaniards’ passion for partying. Snack on tapas as you skip from bar to bar, before heading off to enjoy Spain’s infamous nightlife. Then revitalise the senses – Spain’s cultural heritage brims with flamenco, painting, opera, literature, sport, bullfighting and flamboyant, colourful fiestas.

Bargains abound amid intense airline competition, so there has never been a better time to visit Spain. Just soak up the atmosphere – you won’t be disappointed.
